Escape the bustling Rio de Janeiro city life and explore the enchanting coastal town of Angra dos Reis. Our pre-Christmas weekend getaway proved to be a delightful experience, and we've compiled a two-day guide for you to make the most of your time in this popular small-town-brazilian-destination.
Day 1: Getting There and Exploring Angra dos Reis
Getting There
We started our journey from Lapa in Rio, a short 15-minute Uber ride to the city center bus station. Remember to allow ample time for an Uber. We took the bus that departs at 11:00 am. Tickets are available at the station, and any government-issued ID (other than your passport) is required for purchase. Tickets cost around $10 each.
Bus Ride

The 2-3 hour bus ride includes a quick snack and bathroom stop. You can expect a bit of scenery on the way and you get dropped off at the city center.
Accommodation
For a budget-friendly stay, we recommend Hostel le Monde. With air-conditioned rooms at $30 per day, it's conveniently located near Padaria Mais Que Pao (Literally means more than a bakery!) which is a good breakfast spot and sells other convenience goods. The hostel is also a short distance from the city center (20 min walk or less than a 10 minute uber ride).
If you prefer a more luxurious option, our friend stayed at the Angra Beach Hotel, just a minute's walk away from Hostel le Monde.
Day 1 Continued: Sights and Sunset
Praia Grande

After freshening up at our respective hotels we headed to Praia Grande, which was recommended by our hotel. It's a beautiful beach just a 15-minute Uber ride away.
Bistro do Manequ
After checking out the beach and a few minutes of leisure walks, we treated ourselves to a delightful dinner and delightful cocktails at Bistro do Maneu, which was also recommendation. The restaurant had a great beach view perfect for watching the sunset. We highly recommend their fish dishes!
City Center Exploration
We spent the evening exploring the charming city center, adorned with impressive Christmas decorations that add a festive touch to the small shops.
Day 2: Discovering Ilha Grande
Ilha Grande Tour
We opted for the Ilha Grande tour, offered by Angra Beach Hotel at $30 per person. Book through your hotel or directly at their tour office in the city center.
Tour Itinerary
The tour included multiple stops: beaches, snorkeling spots, a beach-jungle kind of beach, and a one-hour lunch break at a local restaurant. You get about half an hour to explore and enjoy each area or beach stop.

Beach Stop 1 (30 mins)
Snorkeling Spot (30 mins)
Beach Stop 2 (30 mins)
Lunch Break (1 hr)
Beach-Jungle Stop (30 mins)
Tour Conclusion
The tour concluded around sunset, providing a spectacular end to the day. We headed back our hotel for a relaxing night after a day filled with island adventures. We thought about staying a few more days to see Paraty which is also another popular destination but unfortunately it seemed that the weather forecast for the next day would not be the best time for it. We were also doubtful what the schedules were like during Christmas so we decided to head back to RIo instead. Angra dos Reis was a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration for the weekend. Consider our two-day guide and add Paraty to your list too to make the most of your time in this Brazilian coastal gem.
