Loma Pliegue Tumbado: The Hike That Blew Me Away (Literally!)

Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging

Total Distance to the Summit: 10.4 miles (16.7 km)

Elevation: ~3,800 ft (1,160 m)

Imagine battling Patagonian winds so strong you have to find a way around them, all while climbing toward some of the most jaw-dropping views in El Chaltén.

Follow this guide or check out my video to be well prepared for the incredible Loma Pliegue Tumbado trail.

Starting the Trail

Start at the Visitor Center just outside of El Chaltén. The trail is well-marked, and the first section gently ascends through a stunning lenga forest. This hike takes you through diverse landscapes, from lush forests to rugged, windy plateaus.

The forest offers a tranquil start and a chance to spot wildlife like Magellanic woodpeckers if you’re lucky!

What to Expect from The 10.4-mile Journey

About halfway, the incline becomes steeper, the trees thin out, and the infamous Patagonian winds get stronger.

Pro tip: Layer up! It gets colder as you gain elevation.

This is where you’ll also start catching glimpses of Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre in the distance—a preview of what’s to come.

The Summit: Breathtaking Views of Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre, and Lago Viedma

Once you’re above the tree line, the final stretch is a rocky scramble, but the payoff is incredible.

At the top, you’re treated to one of the most breathtaking views in Patagonia. On a clear day, you can see it all—Mount Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre, the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, and even the glacial blue of Lago Viedma.

Be careful on the rocky sections—they can be slippery, especially if the wind’s still going strong.

Tips for Success

✔️Bring water, snacks to fuel your climb, and a windproof jacket

✔️Check what the weather is like before you go. Patagonia’s weather is unpredictable. It's best to go when the sun is out because cloudy days end up being more challenging and you'll miss out on the good views.

✔️Start early. You’ll want to give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the summit without rushing back.

Bonus: The Best Steak Spot to Refuel after the Hike

Head to Parrilla La Oveja Negra in El Chaltén. Their steak is so incredible that we ended up going there twice. It’s a well-deserved treat after the challenging hike and the perfect way to refuel after a day on the trail.
