The Hike

The hike starts in the Los Gigantes region, a place famous for its granite peaks and breathtaking landscapes.

The hike to Cerro Mogote Los Gigantes generally takes 8-10 hours to complete, depending on your pace and the time spent exploring and taking breaks. This includes the ascent to the summit and the return journey. The trail is considered moderate to difficult, so it's crucial to start early in the day to ensure you have ample daylight for the hike.

As you begin your journey, you'll notice the rugged terrain: rocky paths, grassy plains, and some steep ascents, leading to the summit at 2,300 meters (7,546 feet), where the views are truly unforgettable.

Along the way, you’ll pass some incredible rock formations, shaped over millions of years by tectonic shifts.

Half Way

As we reach the halfway point, take a break and enjoy the nature around you. This is where you’re most likely to spot wildlife. During our hike, we encountered a few local animals, like the andean condors as well as this bird who just wants a bit of our guide’s milanesa lunch!

On this hike, be sure to pack the right gear—sturdy boots, sunscreen, a hat, plenty of water, and some energy snacks are essential.

Essentials to Carry: At least 2 liters of water, high-energy snacks, a first-aid kit, and a fully charged phone or GPS device.

Guide or Solo?: While it's possible to hike solo, hiring a local guide is recommended for safety and added insight into the region's geology and wildlife.

The Summit

Now, we’re approaching the summit. At 2,300 meters, the views are absolutely worth the effort. Standing at the top, you’ll be greeted by panoramic views of the surrounding Sierras Grandes mountain range, valleys, and distant peaks.

Don’t forget to capture these picturesque moments! Whether it’s the expansive landscape or the unique rock formations near the peak, there’s no shortage of incredible photo ops.

The Descent

After soaking in the views, it’s time to start the descent. The journey down can be just as rewarding—take your time to explore the nearby caves and more of the incredible rock formations. While the descent is less challenging than the ascent, it’s still important to stay mindful of your footing, especially on the rocky sections.
